Players Reject N.B.A. Offer and Opt to Disband Union

Billy Hunter, the executive director of the now-defunct N.B.P.A., made the announcement just before 2 p.m., after a four-hour meeting of union officials and player representatives from all 30 teams. A letter informing the N.B.A. of the union’s decision was sent before Hunter took the podium.

“The players just felt that they had given enough, that the N.B.A. was not willing or prepared to continue to negotiate,” Hunter said, with more than 40 players packed behind him in a small hotel conference room. “Things were not going to get better.”

The union’s decision comes four days after Commissioner David Stern issued an ultimatum to the union to accept the league’s current proposal, or have it replaced with an inferior deal. Stern reiterated over the weekend that the N.B.A. was done negotiating.

In disbanding, the N.B.P.A. will now become a trade association. It will represent the players’ interests, but for the purposes of bargaining, the players are now considered individuals.

The decision to end the union effectively renders moot a separate effort by agents and players to force decertification of the union. An antitrust lawyer representing that group was set to deliver more than 200 player signatures to the National Labor Relations Board to start the clock on that process. Decertifying – effectively overthrowing union leadership from the outside – would have taken at least six weeks, and would have required a majority vote by the full membership.

By disclaiming interest, the union ceases operations, opening the door to an immediate antitrust lawsuit.

The N.B.A. is expected to challenge the disclaimer as a sham that was perpetuated only to create leverage at the bargaining table. The league made that accusation in August, when it filed a preemptive lawsuit accusing union leaders of threatening to disclaim as a negotiating tactic.

Stern hammered that point again in a statement issued Monday afternoon.

“At a bargaining session in February 2010, Jeffrey Kessler, counsel for the union, threatened that the players would abandon the collective bargaining process and start an antitrust lawsuit against our teams if they did not get a bargaining resolution that was acceptable to them,” Stern said.

In an interview with ESPN, Stern said that the N.B.A. was entering a “nuclear winter.”

In an interview on ESPN, Stern said that the N.B.A. was entering a “nuclear winter.” He also said the league’s latest offer was not an ultimatum but a revised proposal. “When you negotiate for 2 ½ years and finally get to where the parties are ... that’s not an ultimatum. That’s a proposal that’s ready to be voted up or down," Stern said. "They seem hellbent on self-destruction and it’s very sad."

“There will ultimately be a new collective bargaining agreement,” Stern said in his statement, “but the 2011-12 season is now in jeopardy.”

Without a union, the players are now free to sue the N.B.A. under antitrust laws and challenge the legality of the lockout. Hunter said a lawsuit would be filed within the next two days. The players will be represented by Kessler, who had been serving as the union’s outside counsel. He will be joined by David Boies, a renowned lawyer who represented the N.F.L. in its defense against an antitrust suit by N.F.L. players earlier this year.

While the N.F.L. lockout lasted 136 days and did not threaten any regular season games, the N.B.A. lockout has stretched 137 days and cost the first part of the season so far.

Jay-z removes Occupy Wall Street T-shirts from Site

Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Wall Street…

That’s all thats been going on in the media for weeks on end.

And Jay-Z tried to cash on it without giving back!

Mr. Carter whose shirts read “Occupy Wall Streets” went on sell for about $22 each on his labels site, has since been removed because of the outrage surrounding them. They have been removed from the site because NONE of the proceeds are going to be donated to the Occupy Wall Street movement; and people are pissed!

Patrick Bruner, the spokesperson for Occupy Wall Street was quoted saying: “Naturally there will be some bloodsuckers who come out of the woodwork.” - towards Jay-Z

And another member of the group whose named Grim had this to say about the Hip Hop/Rap Mogul.

”Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum. To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as ‘Occupy Wall Street’.”

Heavy D Dies at 44

Before Biggie Smalls, before Rick Ross, there was Heavy D. A rapper who reveled- even celebrated- in having a little bit of heft in the gut.

Hip-hop has always been about bravado. But here was a dude in 1987, straight from Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon, who made the oversized rapper less of a gimmick (like the Fat Boys were) and more of an artist that was meant to be taken seriously. Like Biggie and later Big Pun, he wasn’t running from being larger than life. Why? Because he could rhyme in just about any fashion imaginable. Sure, he had that hustle about him that we all love about rappers. But he was funny: Who didn’t shake their head at “The Overweight Lover’s in the House”? He was conscious: his line in 1989’s “Self Destruction” is classic. He spit, in part:

A-yo, here’s the situation: idi-o-dicy

Nonsense, violence, not a good policy

Therefore, we must ignore, fightin’ and fussin’

Heavy’s at the door so there’ll be no bum-rushing...

He was romantic. He was inspirational. And he was a big-boy playboy who liked to dance. You had to take his game seriously because he was really good at what he did: I still remember trying to rock the moves from the 1988 “We Got Our Own Thang” video. That boy could move!

Dwight Arrington Myers, a.k.a Heavy D, died on Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles. The LA Times reported Wednesday morning that he may have died of complications related to pneumonia. And even though it’s been a minute since he’s dominated the hip-hop game, the entertainment world and its fans bowed a head, sent a tweet, posted a Facebook remembrance. I know I did. He was one of the young, hungry rappers who came along at the right time in the late 1980s who helped define a piece of the evolving New York hip-hop sound, partly by adding some R&B tilt to his game. It was a crowded field back then, with Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane and others, but Mr. Big Stuff wasn’t one to be denied. So, as Washington radio stations start their Heavy D remembrances today, let’s wish the Overweight Lover a Peaceful Journey.

Teairra Mari Assaults A Police Officer During Arrest

Earlier today we found out that songstress Teairra Mari got locked up for a DUI. However, we now have caught wind that she also attacked one of the officers while they were trying to lock her up. While rebelling against her arrest, she left the officer with a minor cut on his hand. This was some kind of wild night because the officer wasn’t the only one she hurt either. More details have emerged saying that she got pulled over around 3 a.m. in her silver Infiniti after she rear ended someone else. Her bail is set to $50,000 and as far as we know she’s still in jail. I don’t know what she was drinking but I would advise no one pour that for her again. Can you believe she attacked a police officer?

Fox News Goes In On Chris Brown

It’s no secret that there are some people out there who are never going to get over what happened between Rihanna and Chris Brown back in 2009. Andy Levy is just another example of this. On Fox News he went on Chris Brown with a straight faced speech that was drenched with a ton of sarcasm. He made statements such as,
“To Mr. Brown, I apologize for reminiscing on the fact that you beat the crap out of Rihanna. It was disrespectful of me to draw attention to the fact that you put your girlfriend in the hospital. And further it was not my place to make people remember that you beat a woman with your fist leaving her with multiple facial contusions, a bloody nose, and a split lip. I know that now”.

Leo DiCaprio first to drop $100k on rare hybrid

Leonardo DiCaprio is environmentally conscious, but he’s also a movie star.
The "Inception" actor has shelled out over $100,000 for the 2012 Fisker Karma hybrid, possibly the most sought-after hybrid car on the market.
The Los Angeles Times reports on DiCaprio's new ride, noting that the star is upgrading from his practical Toyota Prius, which can go from zero to sixty in 10.1 seconds. The Karma can get there in 5.9.
And of course, the Fisker Karma looks a little better. TMZ snapped a photo of the actor checking out his new model.
Car designer Henrik Fisker told Reuters in 2009 that seeing DiCaprio with his Prius helped inspire his new hybrid.
"He could have bought any car in the world," Fisker said, "and I remember seeing that on television and thinking to myself, you know, when you've got a guy who could buy any Ferrari or Rolls-Royce and he's buying a Prius, you know something is changing dramatically."
The car, which is sold out until early 2012, debuts at the end of this month. After DiCaprio gets the first set of keys, Al Gore and Colin Powell will reportedly have their own Karma hybrids.
Despite its outrageous price tag, the Fisker Karma hybrid isn’t even the most expensive hybrid car out there. That would be the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid, which will set you back about $845,000. It may be a lot, but just think how environmentally conscious you’d be!

Watch of the day (Wrist Game Propper)

Bad #Dope

Looks like nose candy and freebase users can expect some side effects from the cocaine supplied by their local dealer, especially if they live in Los Angeles or New York City. Drug dealers are cutting cocaine with levamisole, used for deworming livestock.
Doctors at LA BioMed at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA are warning cocaine users about tainted white powder that's damaging people's faces who snort or smoke it. Truly gross:

Nose, ears and cheeks can develop ugly purple swatches of dead skin, doctors caution.

On the other hand, tapeworms will never be a problem.

A report published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology said six patients developed purple-colored patches of necrotic skin on their ears, nose, cheeks and other parts of their body and, in some instances, suffered permanent scarring after they had used cocaine.

Doctors in San Francisco had previously reported two similar cases there. Others have also reported on users of contaminated cocaine who developed a related life-threatening immune-system disorder called agranulocytosis, which kills 7 percent to 10 percent of patients.

The U.S. Department of Justice has reported that up to 70 percent of cocaine in the U.S. is contaminated with levamisole, which is cheap, widely available and commonly used for deworming livestock.

Levamisole had been prescribed for humans in the past but was discontinued after developing side effects similar to those found in the cocaine users.

"We believe these cases of skin reactions and illnesses linked to contaminated cocaine are just the tip of the iceberg in a looming public health problem posed by levamisole," said Dr. Noah Craft, who is a principal researcher at Los Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed) and author of the report in the Journal.

Craft said he and other physicians were initially baffled by the severity of the skin damage. He's a member of a team of doctors who advise Logical Images, a company that developed a software program, called VisualDx, for diagnosing skin diseases and other conditions.

During one of their conference calls in May 2010, Craft said they began discussing the skin damage seen in emergency rooms in New York and Los Angeles and realized they were all seeing similar patterns and that the one common thread was the use of cocaine prior to the development of the skin damage.

The cases were pooled and added into the professional database immediately so that other physicians across the US were then able to see this new diagnosis.

"We have had several more cases since we wrote this report," he says. "In one of the more interesting ones, the patient used cocaine again and developed the same skin reaction again. He then switched drug dealers and the problem cleared up."

There you go. If your dealer is stepping on your stuff, find another dealer. Here's another idea for coke heads, from long ago and far, far away: Just Say No

Lil Boosie Update

Rapper Lil Boosie could face extra jail time for attempting to smuggle a drug cocktail called "sizzurp" into prison, the Associated Press reports.

Lil Boosie, a 28-year-old rapper from Baton Rouge whose real name is Torrence Hatch, is already serving time on another drug charge.

Boosie is awaiting trial on a first-degree murder charge, for which he could be sentenced to the death penalty.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Hatch on one count of criminal conspiracy to take contraband to and from a penal institution, and another count of inciting a felony.

According to CBS affiliate WAFB, a "confidential source" told authors about the rapper's alleged drug smuggling scheme on April 9.

He thought he was giving the codeine syrup mixture to a security worker at the prison, but it was really a state trooper.

Lil B on Grove Street Remix on Lil Waynes 'Sorry For The Wait Mixtape

Lil Wayne dropped his highly anticipated and aptly titled Sorry 4 the Waitmixtape on Wednesday, further cementing his knack for jacking beats. One surprise on the project was Weezy's take on Waka Flocka Flame's "Grove St. Party," which included a feature from the Based God himself, Lil B.

B was photographed with the YMCB family this past June, and he even tweeted about recording a track with Wayne. Now that the track has finally come to fruition, MTV News caught up with the Based God to chat about the experience and his gratitude to Mack Maine for setting it up.
"He put us two together, me and Wayne, because he knew I had dumb-ass respect and major love for Wayne," Lil B told us. "A lot of people say that I'm like him, and I take that as a compliment. It was crazy to see how Wayne embraced me, how he really respect my music [as] an artist.
"I was nervous, and I don't even get nervous about nothing, but I was nervous with that boy Wayne in that mother----er," he added about their session. "It was a good nervous, because it was like, 'Man, I really made it.' It was a bunch of people in the studio, but Wayne had it for me and him to get on this song, and it was just a real honor."
Lil B said the experience was like an NBA rookie getting a chance to play one-on-one against Kobe or Jordan, adding that Wayne was a fan of his music — the copious amounts of it — and a supporter of what he was doing.
"He really liked the song 'Free Wayne' that I did," Lil B said. "He knows what's up. Wayne is hip. He knows about the cooking dance and everything. We was out there cooking at the Curren$y show, going nuts. Everybody at Cash Money, I just want them to have a long life, be safe, healthy and have fun and be happy."
